therandtoday393.jpgThe stadium being constructed in Cape Town for the FIFA World Cup in 2010 is now seeking a naming sponsor. The City of Cape Town has now put out a tender to the public for the 68 000 seater stadium in Greenpoint for the stadiums naming rights and a new long-term contract for operating the stadium. Construction of the stadium took a while to get going with many hurdles causing the delay of the stadium but now construction is in full swing and the stadium will be ready to host 8 games including a semi-final in the worlds biggest soccer event taking place in 2010. ronscrib2.jpgThere seems to be a trend developing in South African sport lately and it seems to be all about the money. It started off with the rugby players being offered lucrative contracts to play for European teams. Some of the players from South Africa’s world cup winning team are currently playing their rugby in Europe and earning quite a lot of money. There are really two sides to this: Can you blame them for leaving and going to play where they are obviously going to get paid more money, at the end of the day, it is all about the money. They are people with families and their futures to consider and if they are getting job offers which will pay them more then why should they turn them down? On the other hand, is them leaving South Africa good for the game of rugby in South Africa? If the top players have all left the country to go to ‘greener pastures’, will the standard and competition in the local rugby remain the same without the best players? Read the rest of this entry »

ronscribafconlogo.GIFToday the South Africa national football team plays their first match in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and we at The Rand Today would like to wish Bafana Bafana all the best. Do us proud and try by all means to bring the trophy back home to South Africa. All we ask for is that you give it 110% and no one can fault you for doing that even if the results do not go your way. The Springboks set the tone last year by winning the Rugby World Cup now we hope you can follow that up with bringing yet another trophy back.

Good luck Bafana Bafana. We are behind you all the way.

wclogo.jpgCongratulations to South Africa for winning the Rugby World Cup in France on Saturday. It had been 12 years since South Africa had won the trophy and now finally it can return home. Can this victory have a positive influence on the country’s economy?

Many of us will be happy in the office today and through out the rest of the week and maybe for the rest of the year. The general positive atmosphere of the people in South Africa can hopefully lead to the people working harder as one tends to work well when they are in a happy mood. And all this can only bode well for the future. Read the rest of this entry »

125px-bok-logo.jpgThe Rand Today would like to send a good luck message to the South Africa rugby team as they take part in the Rugby World Cup final this weekend against England in Paris.

We are fully behind and we know you are going to do us proud. We can expect not a lot of work to be done come Monday as I am sure the whole country will be in a celebratory mood. It will be interesting to see how the JSE reacts to a Springbok win. Can the Rugby World Cup have an effect on the South Africa economy?

The Twenty20 world cup cricket started last week in South Africa and I had the opportunity to attend a couple of the games played at Newlands in Cape Town. I must say that the organisation of the tournament has gone on well, except for only being able to buy Castle draft and no other beer! To start off with the crowds that have been attending the games have been quiet large and this largely due to the fact that ticket prices have been affordable to the majority of cricket lovers across the country and even those not interested in cricket are willing to pay R20 or R40 a ticket just for the sheer experience.
