The battle between the cellular giants in South Africa continues. This past weekend, Vodacom launched YEBO4LESS which seems to rival MTN’s Zone offering but as with an competition, Vodacom have gone a step further than MTN. What YEBO4LESS and MTN Zone virtually do is; callers get discounted call rates depending on where they are making their call from with regards to the amount of ‘traffic’ in use on the network based on their location. So lets say I am in an area with very little network traffic, my phone call will cost a lot cheaper than if I were in an area such as the CBD where there is a lot of ‘traffic’ on the network. therandtoday63.jpgMany people in South Africa today rely heavily on internet banking. Internet banking came as a life line to many people as it meant that their trips to the bank became fewer and fewer and a lot of transactions they would do at the banking hall could now be done whilst on the internet. It took some time for people to get to grips with internet banking but credit must go to the banks that developed relatively reliable and simple to use interfaces for the online banking portal. therandtoday145.jpgTimes are getting harder in South Africa and data released yesterday proves this. New vehicle sales in South Africa fell by 2.85% year on year in April to 45 536 units. It is really no surprise that people are not buying new cars due to the rising interest rates and higher prices of food and energy. With the fuel pricing having risen today, very few people would be tempted to go out and buy a new car which would most likely consume more fuel. But there are still consumers out there who are always on the look out for new cars and seek to constantly ‘upgrade’ their car in line with new models. Read the rest of this entry »

therandtoday252.jpgAnother day and another record oil price. Yesterday, oil reached the $122 a barrel mark as the market reacted to concerns of violence in Nigeria which is a key producer of oil. Over the weekend, Nigerian militants attacked an oil ship off the coast of Nigeria and took two people hostage. Violent attacks in the oil industry in Nigeria continue to rise and this in turn seems to be fueling a lot of uncertainty in the oil industry as the market fears supply could be affected due to the violence. There is no letting up in the every rising cost of living in South Africa. Yesterday I walked into my local supermarket and saw that the price of bread had gone up by almost 95 cents and for some strange reason there was no brown bread on the shelves. I then tuned into the local news last night and it was confirmed that the price of bread had gone up. We are now looking at close to R9 for a loaf of bread. For families this is going to hit hard as they have many mouths to feed and not forgetting that there are not that many slices in a loaf of bread. Some households are forced to buy a loaf of bread a day to feed everyone. Read the rest of this entry »
