therandtodaymtn.jpgMTN are at it again and this time they have launched a new product which is very creative. The MTN Zone product is different in the sense that MTN subscribers get a discounted call rate depending on the volume of traffic currently on the MTN network they are using. So for example, if I was using MTN and the area I am located in has low levels of traffic i.e. fewer subscribers making fewer calls, I would then be given a discount for using my MTN line in a low traffic area.

When I first read about this MTN Zone product I thought to myself, “Wow, what a great deal!” Especially since it was mentioned that one could get a discount of up to 95% per call. But then upon further investigation I found that this MTN Zone and discounted rates only apply for calls made from MTN to MTN subscribers. This was a bit of a downer as I thought it would apply for all calls from MTN regardless of who you are calling to. But besides that, MTN Zone seems to be a very good product. The product includes a fixed rate of R2.50 per minute (billed per second) and this rate remains the same regardless if it is peak or off-peak.

Then I asked myself the question, “How would I know what discount I am getting before I make a call?” or “How do I know how much traffic is in the area I am using?” As expected MTN had already a solution to my questions. MTN have made sure that if you are on the MTN Zone package, the cell information displayed on your cellphone will show you the discount rate. (Instead of seeing the name of the suburb / area you are in, you will see the discount rate) Or alternatively a subscriber can send the USSD command *135*1# to be given the discount rate at that time.

The MTN Zone product seems to be great if you make a lot of MTN to MTN calls and you live or spend most of your time in an area without too many MTN subscribers. I guess one just has to find the balance and see if this is a good deal for you. But one must say Well Done to MTN for coming up with such a product, now let us wait and see what the other cellular operators in South Africa have up their sleeve to match MTN Zone.
