Inflation up to 8.6%

therandtoday174.jpgIt seems like there is no stopping the rate of inflation in South Africa. The countries consumer price index (CPIX) which excludes mortgage rate changes rose to 8.6% year-on-year in December 2007 from 7.9% in November. This does not bode well for the outlook of the South African economy adding to the current electricity problems being faced. The South Africa central bank is set to announce its decision on interest rates tomorrow (31 January 2008) and with inflation having risen, there could be a chance that interest rates will go up again tomorrow.

With inflation now at 8.6%, one wonders if the central banks target of having inflation of between 3 – 6% will ever be met. It seems like we are continuously edging further and further away from the target. The central bank has tried to bring the inflation rate back down to the target range by increasing interest rates but for now it seems not to be working.

Many predict interest rates not to go up tomorrow but some may change their minds after seeing the data released today of the increase in inflation. Another scary statistic is that annual CPIX for 2007 was 6.5% and in 2006 it was 4.6%. This is a very big increase showing that inflation in South Africa may not just be rising but it may actually be ‘getting out of control’.
