There is no hiding from it anymore now, if you are a running a business today, no matter how small or large it is, you need to be online and have a website for a business. I have come across many businesses in South Africa who do not have a website and to me that just goes to show that businesses in South Africa are still a few paces back from realising the importance of having a website. How often do you hear of a company and then you think, “Let me find out more about them.”? The first thing you would do is type in their company name in your web browser and end it with .co.za or .com. You should be taken to the company’s website straight away. How can you take a business seriously today if they say our email address is companyname@hotmail.com ? Taking nothing away from Hotmail but in today’s world, companies should not be using Hotmail for business email. It is so easy and cheap to go out and purchase your company’s domain name e.g. companyname.co.za and have it hosted with a service provider and then just setup email addresses using that domain name e.g. sales@companyname.co.za . You do not have to have a website to have email addresses with your company name. Once you have your emails setup, the next logical step is to have a website for your business.

The website does not have to be the most technical and flashiest website in the world. To start of with, all you would require is a website with a couple of pages that detail what your business is about. The website can include an ‘About Us’ page which will tell the visitor what your business does and a few pages detailing the products and services you offer and a ‘Contact Us’ page which will display your businesses contact details e.g. physical address, phone number, fax number and even a contact form where a visitor can just filling in their enquiry and at the click of a button the contents of that form are emailed to the businesses owners.

Many businesses, especially start-ups in South Africa are afraid to spend money on a website and the reasons are mainly because: it is too expensive and what are the benefits to the business of having a website?
