TATA has released the TATA Nano which is set to be one of the cheapest cars in the world. The Nano will be retailing for about R17 125 (US$2 500). The release of this car has been met with many mixed reactions from people across the world and it is already causing quite a stir in South Africa.

TATA has designed this vehicle in order to cater for millions of people across the world who previously could not afford to by a car. At the price of US$2 500, car ownership is now going to be a reality for most. The Nano is also said to be very fuel efficient, consuming only 1 litre of fuel per 20 kilometres. The standard Nano will come with no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering.

Chances are high that the TATA Nano will be arriving on the roads of South Africa. From a positive side, it would mean that those who previously did not have a car can now afford to buy one and take away the problems they experienced from being unable to get from point A to point B easily. With the ever rising fuel prices, the fuel efficiency of the Nano could see those with larger cars trading down to get the Nano as they would save a lot from their monthly fuel bill. One would also beat the high interest rates as obtaining R17 125 would not be very difficult and one should not really need financing for that.

On the down side: If ‘everyone’ is able to afford a car that would mean there would be more cars on the roads and with the already high volumes of traffic on the South African roads, this would just cause more traffic problems on roads in South Africa. From an environmental point, the more cars on the road means the more fuel emissions and thus a great chance of increased pollution. Some have also come out and questioned how safe is this car? There has been no mention about the safety features of the Nano yet. Is it coming with air bags? For R17 125, I do not think so.

What do you think of this new R17 125 car?

If it has safety belts its a bonus, but I read that it meets EC standards, so I am guessing that not only does it have a seat and an engine, it probably has crumple zones too.

Mind you I’d rather be on the pavement than in one of those being hit with a 4×4

This is the car young people have been waiting for, it is affordable and funky. Why start out with a scrap car when you can have a brand new, reliable car.

As far as I know, the new Tata Nano will not be available in South Africa for at least the next 2 years. The pricing will also be different due to import duties, VAT & shipping costs.

As a Tata dealership in South Africa we have been inundated with calls for the Nano. For now we have no pricing or final specs available to the South African clients and can also not give an exact date for launch in South Africa.

Our cheapest car is still the TATA Indica 1.4i LE @ R68 995. This car is a 5 door hatch with power steering standard. It also comes standard with a 2 year 45000 km service plan, 3 year factory warranty and roadside assistance… Still the best deal in South Africa.

For more information contact us at out Tata dealership in Mowbray, Cape town # 021 686 5558.
