After the success of Monday’s National Braai day, I wonder why South Africa has not had this day before as it was a very enjoyable day with people celebrating South Africa’s favourite pastime, braaing.

On the actual day (Monday), I went to my local supermarket in the morning and saw almost ten people at one time buying braai stands and there was a lot of activity in the supermarket’s section where all the braaing utensils are sold, most notably charcoal. I do not think the supermarket had anticipated such a large demand as when I went back to the supermarket in the evening they had run out of charcoal.

I guess with it being the first National Braai day many retailers did not know what to expect but based on Mondays response I think next years and future years braai days will become bigger events and this is where smart retailers could capitalise on. Charcoal sales will clearly be high on braai days as, charcoal will be to braai day what roses are to Valentines day. If one could be able to brand packaging for charcoal inline with braai day they could surely sell well as almost everyone would buy their charcoal as it is branded for that specific day. Something simple like “Braai day charcoal” will do. Marketing it would be easy as you are marketing based on a day everyone knows about.

One could also brand braai stands specifically for braai day and market them a month or two before the braai day. Even specially branded packaging for the meat people will buy for braai day and retailers can run special promotions for meat during the period just pefore the braai day.

The day has now been set, so let us now not only enjoy it but find ways to make money from it to.
